The Penetang Museum
The Penetang Museum now has it’s own website and is open for business! The Genealogy Room volunteers have photographed and recorded all the inscriptions on the tombstones in the newer sections of St. Ann’s Cemetery. It is being provided as a free service and should be welcome by most researchers who are looking for information beyond 1979, the last time the inscriptions were done, and 1910 when records become harder to obtain. The Penetanguishene Centennial Museum Genealogy Research Room is pleased to announce the completion of Phase 1 of our most recent project. Continuing the work of Stella M. Gianetto, the volunteers have recorded the inscriptions and photographed all the tombstones in the newer sections (Holy Family and Resurrection) of St. Ann’s Cemetery in Penetanguishene. The results are now available in a searchable database on our new website. See the links below. Click on Genealogical Research to access the cemetery database. You will be able to obtain the information by clicking on a name. You will see the names of all others recorded on the grave marker and a full inscription. Also included are the first four rows of the old section. Pictures are not available for this area as it was used as a test only. Our web site does not have the capacity, as yet, to hold all 775 pictures of the completed section, but by clicking on the highlighted location an email form will appear. Insert the location code in the subject line and send. The return email will contain an attachment with the picture in Jpg format and the location code in the subject line. This is the first in a multi-phased operation expected to take two years to complete. Our spring project is to photograph, map and record the older sections of St. Ann’s. We will post the results as they are completed. St. James-on-the-Lines, one of the oldest cemeteries in the area, is also slated for completion in 2003. Please be sure to check out the other sections of the website, in particular the list of research materials. While not a complete list, you will see we have an outstanding collection of church records available nowhere else in the county, province or country. If you are planning a visit in person, please refer to the hours of operation for the Museum. We accept queries by email. A nominal fee for lookup services is charged with the funds used to purchase research material. Pam Tessier.
