Stories & Stats of the 8th Planters' Invitational ( 2005 )

LEAFS FALL TO PENGUINS
Pittsburgh Penguins defeat Toronto Maple Leafs 16-7 to claim the 8th Planters' Invitational title. GM Petr Coum added as GM Jon Tornblom had to bow out. Here's a wrap-up of the games that led up to the finale.

1. Detroit @ Toronto
In this game, goalie switches was the name of the game here as Toronto GM Mike Hurlbert made a total of five goalie changes while his counterpart GM Petr Coum watched his coach Tom Pruce (pronounced "kroos") make an unusual change in net.
The Leafs staked out to an early 3-0 lead on goals by Rocky Harasymchuk, Wendel Clark, and Paul Kariya. It was after Kariya's goal that prompted Pruce to pull starting goalie Patrick Roy. But instead of replacing Roy with back-up Chris Osgood, Pruce sent in defenseman Larry Murphy. Apparently Murphy had put on goalie pads to demonstrate his protest of being bumped off the starting line-up in favour of a curler (Cathy Borst), but had no idea that he would be pressed into action as a goalie. If Murphy wanted ice time, he got loads of it. Somehow, that ignited the Red Wings as Sergei Zubov and Niklas Lidstrom replied and that was when GM Hurlbert made his first goalie change, pulling starter Jimmy Harasymchuk and replacing her (yes, a female named Jimmy) with Ed Belfour.
But that didn't stop Detroit. Belfour faced only three shots but allowed goals by Keith Tkachuk and Sergei Fedorov as Detroit took a 4-3 lead. After Fedorov's short-handed goal, Hurlbert sent back in Jimmy Harasymchuk. Jimmy got pulled once again after a Wayne Gretzky power-play goal to give Detroit a 5-3 lead. Harasymchuk was replaced this time by Felix Potvin and Toronto settled down, especially after finding out it was Murphy in the Detroit net. Alexander Mogilny's short-handed marker made it 5-4, then Eric Lindros pumped in two straight to give the Leafs a 6-5 lead, the second on a penalty shot. Sergei Berezin and Tkachuk traded goals to make it 7-6 Toronto.
At some point Potvin was yanked in favour of Harasymchuk. The goalie-change stats tech doesn't recall if it was before or after Craig Wolanin's goal, but was heard muttering something about not being paid enough to work Hurlbert games. Wolanin scored to make it 8-6, but Detroit's Peter Bondra on the power-play made it 8-7. Bondra scored his goal on Potvin who had returned replacing the injured Harasymchuk. Berezin's second of the game rounded out the scoring.
Fedorov finished with a goal and three assists while teammate Keith Tkachuk scored two goals. Lindros led Toronto's attack with two goals.
Three Stars:
1) Sergei Fedorov (Det)
2) Keith Tkachuk (Det)
3) Eric Lindros (Tor)

FINAL SCORE: Detroit 7 @ Toronto 9

2. Chicago @ Pittsburgh

The Chicago Blackhawks were really never in this game, though they made a valiant effort near the end.
Pittsburgh opened up a 3-0 lead on goals by Jodi Allaway, Cliff Ronning, and Alexei Kovalev. Chicago's Teemu Selanne made it 3-1, but then the Penguins pumped in four goals to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Ronning with his second of the game, Erin Brophey, Petr Nedved, and Kovalev's second scored for Pittsburgh.
Tony Amonte scored for Chicago to make it 7-2, but then Pittsburgh scored five more to make it 12-2 as Mario Lemieux scored twice, Brophey scored her second and third goals of the game and Phil Housley added the fifth. Chicago made it closer with four of their own as Dean McMean, Mike Modano, Brian Leetch and Selanne with his second made it 12-6. Pittsburgh's Jaromir Jagr scored the game's final goal as the Pens won their opener.
Lemieux finished the game with 2 goals and 2 assists while Jagr (playing the tournament as a right defenseman) picked up a goal and 3 assists. Brophey (a right winger playing as a left winger in this tournament) pitched in with three goals.
Three Stars:
1) Mario Lemieux (Pit)
2) Jaromir Jagr (Pit)
3) Erin Brophey (Pit)

FINAL SCORE: Chicago 6 @ Pittsburgh 13

3. Chicago @ Detroit

This game pitted both 0-1 teams against one another. To GM Dean Barker's dismay, the Blackhawks were caught sleeping from the start as Detroit jumped out to a 5-0 lead on goals by Tkachuk, Fedorov, Captain Kangaroo, Bondra, and Pavel Bure. Paul Coffey finally solved Patrick Roy to put Chicago on the scoreboard. Cathy Borst (who replaced Larry Murphy on the starting line-up) restored Detroit's five-goal lead as it was now 6-1 Detroit.
Brian Leetch and Mike Modano scored to make it 6-3 before Captain Kangaroo's second made it 7-3 for the Red Wings. Then it happened. Perhaps the Blackhawks finally woke up. Mark Messier, then Coffey, Dean McMean, and Jeremy Roenick scored to tie the game up at 7-7. Would Chicago be able to continue the comeback? or would Detroit regain control of the game again. The answer? Leetch and Leetch again. Not only did Leetch notch a hat trick, it was a six goal outburst by the Blackhawks to snatch a 9-7 victory over Detroit.
Leetch finished with 3 goals and an assist; Coffey had 2 goals and an assist; and Fedorov finished with a goal and 2 assists for Detroit.
Chicago goalie Rekrab McNally had an outstanding game as he stopped 78 of 84 shots. Jeff Hackett, filling in for the slightly injured McNally ( exhaustion ? ) with 7 minutes left in the second period, stopped 7 of 8 shots, as Detroit took 92 shots.
Three Stars:
1) Brian Leetch (Chic)
2) Paul Coffey (Chic)
3) Sergei Fedorov (Det)

FINAL SCORE: Chicago 9 @ Detroit 7

4. Toronto @ Pittsburgh

In a battle of unbeaten teams, it was a close game for the most part. Pittsburgh's Lemieux and Nedved put the Pens up 2-0. Rocky Harasymchuk replied for Toronto. Lemieux with his second of the game, and Lindros traded goals. That made it 3-2 Pittsburgh.
Then Pittsburgh got three in a row as Jagr, Nedved's second of the game and Lemieux's third gave Pittsburgh a 6-2 lead before Alexander Mogilny answered for the Leafs. Jagr scored again, making it 7-3. Dmitri Yushkevich's short-handed goal brought Toronto closer at 7-4. But that was as close as Toronto would get as Pittsburgh pulled away. Kevin Hatcher and Lemieux's fourth of the game made it 9-4. Lindros made it 9-5, but Alexei Kovalev and Ian Moran scored to give Pittsburgh an 11-5 win.
Lemieux finished with four goals including 2 power-play goals and a short-handed goal while Jagr and Petr Nedved notched 2 goals each.
Three Stars:
1) Mario Lemieux (Pit)
2) Jaromir Jagr (Pit)
3) Petr Nedved (Pit)

FINAL SCORE: Toronto 5 @ Pittsburgh 11

5. Pittsburgh @ Detroit

This game had no implications for the finals as there was no way for Detroit to be in and Pittsburgh had clinched home ice for the finals. Did this mean the Pens would relax? Are you kidding? After giving both Toronto and Chicago scares, GM Wong didn't want his team to slack off.
The first period saw an explosion of goals. There were eight goals scored in that period. Unfortunately for the Red Wings, none were on their side as Pittsburgh cruised to an 8-0 lead after one period. Goal scorers were Petr Nedved, Rob Niedermayer, Phil Housley, Alexei Kovalev with the next two, Erin Brophey, Jaromir Jagr, and Housley with his second of the game.
The stunned Detroit team tried to make the best of their situation and was rewarded with three goals in the middle frame. Keith Tkachuk, Steve Yzerman, and Cathy Borst scored for Detroit. However, Pittsburgh also scored with three of their own as Nedved, Jagr, and Brophey all found the back of the net. After two periods, the score read 11-3 Pittsburgh.
By the start of the third period, most of the fans had left the stadium ( most mid-way through the first period ), and the few remaining fans left thought it couldn't get any worse. Detroit did add three more goals including Tkachuk's second of the game, but the story was at the other end of the rink where Patrick Roy had probably his worse ever Planters Invitational game. After allowing eight goals in the first, three in the second, it looked like Roy was regaining his form. Not so. Joe Dziedzic scored first, then it was Ian Moran, then Nedved with three straight, then Jodi Allaway, then Dziedzic again, then Brophey with the next two goals, then Fredrik Olausson, and finally, Brophey with her third of the period. In all, Pittsburgh scored eleven goals in that period alone. The Penguins were actually outshot by Detroit 65-60. The only bright spot for Detroit was Tkachuk who managed to get 2 goals and 2 assists for a 4 point game.
Erin Brophey (who also plays the oboe) finished with 5 goals and 2 assists while Nedved added 5 goals and an assist.
Three Stars:
1) Erin Brophey (Pit)
2) Petr Nedved (Pit)
3) Keith Tkachuk (Det)

FINAL SCORE: Pittsburgh 22 @ Detroit 6

6. Toronto @ Chicago

This was a big game in that whoever wins goes to the finals. In fact, this was a playoff-type game as whoever loses goes home while the winner advances.
Rocky Harasymchuk opened the scoring but Jeremy Roenick answered back. Then Toronto scored four goals. Steve Sullivan, Rocky's second of the game, Mogilny, and Lindros did the damage. Steve Smith replied for the Blackhawks, making it 5-2 Toronto. Mike Gartner and Mogilny again made it 7-2 before Mike Modano scored for Chicago.
With the score 7-3, would Chicago mount another comeback? Lindros, Clark, and Kariya all said no as they staked Toronto to an insurmountable 10-3 lead. Mark Messier and Tony Amonte made the score a bit more respectable before Mathieu Schneider and Messier traded goals. With the win, Toronto advanced to the finals against Pittsburgh.
Lindros finished with 2 goals and 2 assists; Rocky Harasymchuk 2 goals and an assist; and Paul Kariya one goal and 2 assists.
Three Stars:
1) Eric Lindros (Tor)
2) Rocky Harasymchuk (Tor)
3) Paul Kariya (Tor)

FINAL SCORE: Toronto 11 @ Chicago 6

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Toronto @ Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh jumped out in front early when Jodi Allaway scored but Toronto rebounded with goals by Lindros and Mogilny. Jagr tied the game up at 2-2 and then Allaway's second gave Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead. However, Mike Gartner tied it up at 3-3. Pittsburgh went up when Petr Nedved scored, but once again Toronto tied it up when Rocky Harasymchuk put one past Mike Richter.
Erin Brophey and Nedved made it 6-4 Pittsburgh only to have Toronto stay close when Owen Nolan scored. It was now 6-5 Pittsburgh. Then it happened. Before you knew it, the score read 12-5 as Rob Niedermayer, Brophey, Jagr, Brophey again, Roman Oksiuta, and Fredrik Olausson scored for Pittsburgh. Craig Wolanin and Mogilny made it 12-7, but Pittsburgh scored the games' final four goals as Ed Olczyk, Jagr, Allaway, and Olczyk again salted the game away. Pittsburgh outshot Toronto 84-45. Erin Brophey had 3 goals and 3 assists, Jagr had 3 goals and 2 assists while Mogilny finished with 2 goals and 2 assists for Toronto in a losing cause. Brophey also captured the Playoff MVP honours despite being shifted over from right wing to left wing for the tournament.
Three Stars:
1) Erin Brophey (Pit)
2) Jaromir Jagr (Pit)
3) Alexander Mogilny (Tor)

FINAL SCORE: Toronto 7 @ Pittsburgh 16

Carolina Hurricanes Theme Song
( sung to the tune played after each Carolina goal at home games )

[ Lyrics made popular after Carolina lost to Stan Milnes' New Jersey team in MC-26 ]

We are the Carolina Hurricanes

We are the Carolina Hurricanes
a team with speed and skill
we should have won
if it weren't for Stan !
