Stories & Stats of the 26th Mushroom Cup

[ November 20, 2004 ]

Mushroom Cup No. 26 was not a tournament for the record books as no records fell, and only one was tied. General Manager Mike Hurlbert had the lone record moment when Eric Lindros tied the record for the most points for three-star selections with Vancouver Canucks' Pavel Bure with 16 points. Bure did it back in MC-4 (May 6/95) under the tutelage of Mike Shaw.
Lindros was playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, which was a story in itself. Moments before the trading deadline, GMs Hurlbert and New Jersey's Stan Milne thought a deal was done only to find that the rules were against it. The deal would have seen Lindros shipped off to New Jersey for Patrik Elias. As it turns out, Lindros lead his team in scoring big time, while Elias played an important part in the Devils' Mushroom Cup run.

PLAYOFF REVIEW

1. Vancouver @ Carolina
The Carolina Hurricanes struck quickly with goals by Mark Recchi and two by Bill Guerin to give the Canes a
3-0 lead. But the pesky Canucks made it close when Brendan Morrison and John LeClair scored to make it a
3-2 game. Then it happened. Before you could say "a storm is approaching", Carolina pumped in four straight goals to take a 7-2 lead, and that was it for Vancouver. Tony Amonte and Geoff Sanderson made it 5-2, and then the final nails were driven in as Keith Tkachuk scored twice to make it a five goal lead. Mario Lemieux (who was a huge disappointment in GM Scot Morrison's eyes) and Ed Jovanovski made it closer but Carolina's Bret Hedican's short-handed goal closed the door on the Canucks. Recchi finished with a goal and three assists.
Three Stars:   1) Mark Recchi(Car)      2) Keith Tkachuk(Car)      3) Brendan Morrison(Van)
FINAL SCORE:    Vancouver 4 @ Carolina 8

2. Ottawa @ New Jersey
In this quarter-final game, New Jersey GM Stan Milne would be facing not Mike Shaw, but rather the computer, but it would still be a battle. To Milne's dismay, the Sens' Marian Hossa would score twice to make it 2-0 Ottawa. Jay Pandolfo and Scott Stevens made it 2-2. Then at some point before the period ended, Ottawa's Dominik Hasek got injured, and Felix Potvin entered the game. Jaromir Jagr gave Ottawa a 3-2 lead then New Jersey went ahead on goals by Al MacInnis and Grant Marshall. 4-3 New Jersey after one period.
Jeff Friesen's short-handed marker gave New Jersey a 5-3 lead, but the computer-led Senators refused to give up. First Saku Koivu, then Alexei Kovalev, and then Hossa with his third of the game, gave Ottawa a 6-5 lead. The Devil's Mark Messier closed out the scoring in the second period. 6-6 after two periods.
Messier scored to open the third period and it was 7-6 New Jersey. With four minutes gone, Devils' starting goalie Jose Theodore was hurt, so in came Martin Brodeur. Sens' Bryan Smolinski said hello to Brodeur just before popping one by Brodeur. The game was now tied 7-7. New Jersey finally pulled away when Patrik Elias, Tommy Albelin, and Sergei Zubov scored unanswered goals to give New Jersey the victory.
Three Stars:   1) Marian Hossa(Ott)   2) Mark Messier(NJ)   3) Saku Koivu(Ott)
FINAL SCORE:    Ottawa 7 @ New Jersey 10

3. New Jersey @ Detroit
This semi-final match-up pitted the Devils against the undefeated Red Wings. However, Jay Pandolfo opened the scoring and it was 1-0 New Jersey. Then Mike Modano scored, and the game was tied 1-1 after one period.
In the second, Detroit pumped in three straight giving Detroit a 4-1 lead. Goal scorers were Chris Chelios, Bryan Berard, and Brendan Shanahan. It looked like a commanding lead, but was it? Once again, New Jersey was forced to play from behind. Grant Marshall got them started, then Scott Stevens, and finally Jeff Friesen, set up by Darren Langdon. It was 4-4 after two.
Detroit's Kevin Miller made it 5-4, but then it was New Jersey's turn for three straight goals. Alexandre Daigle, Patrik Elias, and Langdon scored, giving the Devils a 7-5 lead. Now it was the Red Wings' turn as Niklas Lidstrom and Steve Yzerman scored to tie the game. Scott Niedermayer put New Jersey up 8-7, but Berard's second of the game tied it at 8-8. The winning goal was scored on the power-play as Elias got one past Manny Legace, in net for Detroit.
Afterwards, there were rumours flying that Detroit shot themselves in the foot by allowing at least two funny soft goals. GM Harbron was unavailable for comment. As far as GM Milne was concerned, his team was headed for the big dance!
Three Stars:   1) Mike Modano(Det)   2) Chris Chelios(Det)   3) Patrik Elias(NJ)
FINAL SCORE:    New Jersey 9 @ Detroit 8

4. Carolina @ Toronto
When these two teams met in regular season play, Toronto scored a convincing 5-2 win. Could they repeat?
Toronto's Owen Nolan opened the scoring, only to have Carolina's Keith Tkachuk respond. Eric Lindros gave the Leafs the lead again, but Tkachuk scored again. It was now 2-2. Then the sniper Aki Berg got two past Canes goalie Martin Gerber to make it 4-2 Toronto, and the fans were going wild. They were celebrating in the stands, but they should have listened to the weather report. The report said hurricane-force storm approaching. And then the Hurricanes struck. Bill Guerin, Brad May while short-handed, Rod Brind'Amour also while short-handed, Rob Niedermayer on the power-play, and Mag Ruffman (the repairwoman who likes to stroll down Avonlea Road), also on the power-play all scored to salt the game away. Five unanswered goals as the Leafs wilted away. Afterwards, Toronto GM Mike Hurlbert was asked why he started Jimmy Harasymchuk in net instead of Ed Belfour, the goalie who beat the Canes in regular play. Hurlbert said he felt Harasymchuk could do the job. In defense of Hurlbert, Harasymchuk was named Second All-Star Team goaltender and had the second-best GAA during regular season play.
Three Stars:   1) Keith Tkachuk(Car)   2) Aki Berg(Tor)   3) Bill Guerin(Car)
FINAL SCORE:    Carolina 7 @ Toronto 4

MUSHROOM CUP GAME: New Jersey @ Carolina
This game was a tight defensive game, especially in the third period, as both teams played as if the first to blink loses. Sergei Zubov and Grant Marshall put New Jersey up in front 2-0 before Bill Guerin and Mark Recchi replied making it 2-2 after the first period.
Recchi's second goal opened the second period but was answered by Patrik Elias' power-play goal. Tony Amonte put Carolina up 4-3, set up by Rob Niedermayer, but Alexandre Daigle's short-handed goal tied it at 4-4 after two.
The third period was intense as no one wanted to make the crucial error. Both goaltenders, Jose Theodore of New Jersey and Carolina's Martin Gerber came up big when they had to. Finally, Scott Niedermayer put one past Gerber and it was 5-4 New Jersey. Carolina tried to storm back, but was denied this time, as New Jersey outshot Carolina 40-21 and came away with the Cup. This was GM Stan Milne's first ever Mushroom Cup victory. Milne, who was in his eighth MC tournament, was still shaking from nerves thirty minutes after the final buzzer but was relieved to finally win the Mushroom Cup. As the saying goes, "Stan, you da man!" --- Douglas Lim reporting.
