Series Recap
Back on Thursday May 5, the 1992/93 Pittsburgh Penguins clashed with the 1976/77 Montreal Canadiens in a best-of-seven Championship Series in the first Tournament of Legends. The Penguins were playing the unbeaten Canadiens and knew it would be an uphill battle. However, the Canadiens were not going to take Pittsburgh lightly as the Penguins eliminated the previously unbeaten Edmonton Oilers earlier. This would be the storyline for the series.
Game 1
Game 1 saw a hungry Montreal squad eating up the visiting Pittsburgh team. Jacques Lemaire put the Habs up 1-0. Mario Lemieux tied it up at 1-1, then the roof collapsed on the Penguins as Montreal scored four unanswered goals to claim a 5-1 victory. Guy Lafleur scored twice, followed by Larry Robinson and Steve Shutt with a goal each. Ken Dryden stopped 9 of 10 shots while Pittsburgh's Tom Barrasso stopped 13 of 18 shots. Three stars were:
1) Jacques Lemaire (76/77 Mon) 2) Guy Lafleur (76/77 Mon) 3) Larry Robinson (76/77 Mon)
Final score: Pittsburgh 1 @ Montreal 5
( Montreal leads best-of-seven series 1-0 )
Game 2
Game 2 saw a much different Pittsburgh team as the Penguins gave Montreal all it could handle. Pittsburgh limited Montreal to only 15 shots and only gave up a goal by Guy Lapointe. But as brilliant as Barrasso was, Dryden did one better as he stopped all 18 Pittsburgh shots. Three stars were:
1) Guy Lapointe (76/77 Mon) 2) Jacques Lemaire (76/77 Mon) 3) Steve Shutt (76/77 Mon)
Final score: Pittsburgh 0 @ Montreal 1
( Montreal leads best-of-seven series 2-0 )
Game 3
Game 3 saw the series shift to Pittsburgh and the question was would home ice help the Penguins. Well, one Penguin would rise to the occassion as Mario Lemieux opened the scoring to give Pittsburgh their first ever lead. After Lemaire tied it up, another key Penguin, Kevin Stevens, put Pittsburgh up 2-1. Guy Lafleur tied it at 2-2, and then came frantic action as time wound down. When the third period ended, the score read 2-2. With just 2 minutes gone in overtime, Lemieux swooped down the right boards and snapped a wrist shot from outside the face-off circle past Dryden for the game winner. Pittsburgh outshot Montreal 33-13. Three stars were:
1) Mario Lemieux (92/93 Pit) 2) Kevin Stevens (92/93 Pit) 3) Jacques Lemaire (76/77 Mon)
Final score: Montreal 2 @ Pittsburgh 3 --- [ OT ]
( Montreal leads best-of-seven series 2-1 )
Game 4
Game 4 saw end to end action as the teams swapped leads. Lapointe gave the Habs a 1-0 lead only to have the red-hot Mario Lemieux tie it at 1-1. Rick Tocchet gave Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead and it looked like Pittsburgh was ready to tie the series up. But Montreal scored twice. First, it was Jacques Lemaire, then Larry Robinson with the winner despite Montreal being outshot by Pittsburgh 32-18. Three stars were:
1) Mario Lemieux (92/93 Pit) 2) Guy Lapointe (76/77 Mon) 3) Kevin Stevens (92/93 Pit)
Final score: Montreal 3 @ Pittsburgh 2
( Montreal leads best-of-seven series 3-1 )
Game 5
Game 5 was do or die for the Pittsburgh Penguins as they hoped to prolong the series. Once again, Pittsburgh outshot Montreal, this time 26-15. Once again, Dryden was a pillar of strength for the Habs. Unfortunately for the Pens, Barrasso had probably his worst game of the playoffs. Montreal got goals from all five skaters and to put an exclamation mark, even Dryden came away with an assist. Robinson, Lapointe, Lafleur, Shutt, then Lemaire made it 5-0 while Dryden stopped all 26 shots as the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens claimed the first ever title in the Tournament of Legends. Despite losing in five games, GM Scot Morrison has taken giant steps forward, and considering that Games 2, 3, & 4 were all decided by one goal, the series was a lot closer than anticipated. Three stars were:
1) Guy Lapointe (76/77 Mon) 2) Guy Lafleur (76/77 Mon) 3) Jacques Lemaire (76/77 Mon)
Final score: Pittsburgh 0 @ Montreal 5
( Montreal wins best-of-seven Championship Series 4-1 )
