Toronto @ New Jersey [ Bronze Medal Game ] These two teams met twice during the regular season with the teams splitting. New Jersey won the first game 9-3 while the Leafs beat the Devils 6-5 in the rematch. The Bronze Medal game started off on the right foot for the Leafs as they stormed out to an early 4-0 lead. Darcy Tucker opened the scoring on a short-handed effort. Brian Leetch made it 2-0, then Alexander Mogilny's two goals gave the Leafs a 4-0 lead. However, New Jersey wasn't ready to wave the towel yet. New Jersey's scoring leader Patrik Elias finally put New Jersey on the scoreboard. Then, two short-handed goals (one by Jeff Friesen, the other by Jay Pandolfo) to the dismay of Toronto G.M. Mike Hurlbert made it a one-goal game at 4-3. But Trevor Kidd, replacing the injured Ed Belfour, closed the door and Toronto won 4-3. 1) Alexander Mogilny (Tor) 2) Patrik Elias (NJ) 3) Bryan McCabe (Tor)
FINAL SCORE: Toronto 4 @ New Jersey 3
In regular season play, Detroit Red Wings swept the Tampa Bay Lightning in two straight, outscoring the Bolts 25-5. Needless to say, the Lightning had their work cut out for them. Like the earlier game, one team scored the first four goals of the game. Robert Lang, Brett Hull (on the power-play), Niklas Lidstrom, and Mathieu Schneider gave Detroit a 4-0 lead before Tampa Bay replied with Dave Andreychuk's goal. Unlike the earlier game, that was all the Lightning could muster as Detroit added seven more goals en route to an 11-1 drubbing. Lidstrom scored twice more to earn his hat trick, while Steve Yzerman scored twice with singles going to Jason Woolley, Brendan Shanahan, and Ray Whitney. Detroit finished the tournament undefeated. 1) Niklas Lidstrom (Det) 2) Steve Yzerman (Det) 3) Robert Lang (Det)
FINAL SCORE: Tampa Bay 1 @ Detroit 11
