THUNDER COUNTRY HISTORY:

We are the Thunder Bay District Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society will undertake to help you in your research within the scope of their policy on such matters. The address is Box 10373, Thunder Bay ON P7B 6T8. Our Newsletter "Past Tents" published quarterly is available to members. Contact the branch for subscriptions. Another publication called "Pick & Shovel", is an excellent source book of genealogical resources for Northwestern Ontario.

Please note that a District is not a cousin of a County. It is a Judicial area only, and has no government as such. Within the District are a number of organized communities and townships, or groups of townships, of which some have municipal structure. By far, the bulk of the land is still held in the stewardship of the Ontario Government. Hence it is called Crown Land. Geographical townships abound, but most of them are simply the result of the surveyor's work when establishing rail or road locations. (Also political V.I.P.s like to have their name on something).

The key to finding and accessing records is to know the name and location of the governing authority, if any. To this end our Society is ready and willing to help. During future times we hope to make much more of that information available for Quiries. Local information on those subjects relevant to genealogical research in general, and to those details and records which are available in specific locations throughout the Districts are best found on Thunder Bay District Genweb .

Researchers must remember that this is a relatively new part of the world. Other than the fur trade, some Jesuit missionary work, and the early silver mining activity; records- and people- are virtually non existent up to 1870. Names and borders have also undergone a number of changes in the short history of the area.
