![]() Reference Books for Prostate Cancer and Prostate ProblemsHere are three books I found to be very informative. This first book was loaned to me by my urologist on the day he told me I had prostate cancer. It was very helpful in understanding the disease and possible treatments. (It also has a lot of information on the TURP procedure for those not diagnosed with prostate cancer.) This book took away a good deal of the immediate fear and shock of learning I had cancer. I read it with my wife that first evening and we resolved to share all information together, as well as attendance at any following doctor visits. This book provided a lot of answers, and raised some questions for discussion with our doctors involved. Before every doctor visit, we jointly prepared a written list of questions so none would be forgotten. Typically, I read the questions and she wrote down the answers given. Her presence allowed her to ask many follow-up questions that I never thought of. "So you're having Prostate Surgery" This second book was purchased by a friend who has had prostate cancer for several years. (He is at the "watchful waiting" stage.) He loaned me the book while I was waiting to get my own copy. This book of essays on the disease, and treatments, and follow-ups, and side-effect issues is extremely comprehensive. "Prostate cancer Quoting from the CMA webpage: "This book comprises a series of articles from the CMAJ that have been specially updated. Its purpose? Simply to answer the many clinical questions surrounding prostate cancer. These questions become clear in the 13 chapter titles, such as Individual risk factors and Urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction." Website: www.cma.ca advises the following about Ordering CMA Books The third book was found locally at a used bookstore. It is a mini biography of an American physician from the time he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It is his story of how he dealt with the shocking news, decided particular treatment, his hospital stay, recovery, and side-effects. Very compelling and encouraging, with lots of useful tips. Your best chance of finding this book locally should start with your public library. If not held locally, they can likely get it from the inter-library loan program in a fairly short time. You might also obtain your own copy by doing a web search, or checking at a large internet used book service such as Alibris. On the day this was written, Alibris had many copies listed for well under $10. "Me Too.
