Grey Wolf Scout Camp Overview

Grey Wolf is a 168 acre wilderness area within 30 minutes of downtown Thunder Bay. Just 15 Km Southwest of the junction of Highway 11-17, Highway 61 and Arthur Street, it is convenient for travelers from the USA, East and West of the City.

Grey Wolf offers a quiet four season wilderness retreat nestled against the Nor' Westers Mountain range. Versatile accommodations include cabins, tenting areas, survival/wilderness camping as well as limited space for RVs and Travel trailer parking. A wheelchair accessible meeting area and a barrier-free Biffy makes Grey Wolf accessible to almost everyone.

Two large fields are suitable for tenting, sports, gatherings, and other activities.

A creek meanders through the woods and across the back of the Amphitheater, bubbling over rocks, into beaver ponds, and finally over a small water fall on the edge of the property.

Marked trails abound for hikers of all ages and abilities.

Wild animals, plants and trees make nature study a favorite pastime at Grey Wolf Scout Camp.

Accommodations

A range of accommodations help meet the needs of groups using Grey Wolf with bunk beds for 40 people in comfortable quarters.

Electrically heated cabins and lodges, equipped with an interconnected smoke alarm system, offer a safe and comfortable stay for groups of all sizes.

Charnock Lodge has bunks for 22 people, and a small meeting area.
Two "Patrol" Cabins each sleep 8.
The Dennis Maguire Training Centre features an 12 x 19 foot kitchen and a 19 x 30 foot multi-purpose meeting room that is barrier free.
The South side of the driveway has been graveled to accommodate parking for vehicles, RVs and Travel trailers. However no hookups are available.

Facilities

A drilled well with an electric pump, supplies campers with an abundance of water.
This is not treated, and cannot be used for drinking under the Safe Drinking Water Act of Ontario.

The two kitchens are each equipped with an electric stove, fridge and microwave oven. While there is a limited supply of dishes, pots and pans, campers are expected to come self contained.

KYBOs (Vault Toilets) are located in 4 areas for the gratification of the campers. Two are conveniently located beside the road, while the third, a barrier free KYBO, is hidden among the trees by the fire shelter, and is usually restricted to adults, camp staff and those requiring a barrier free KYBO.

There is another KYBO located in the survival area east of the field area.

A 7 acre field between the road and Farrell Lodge is the tenting area, where tent "cities" spring to life during Beaver, Cub and Scout Camps. A smaller 3 acre field, located behind Charnock Lodge, is more suitable for sports, camp fires and other activities.

An informal friendship fire area with seating for about 50 is contained in the pole shelter.

The Amphitheater is just the area for a large campfire, an outdoor lecture or entertainment theater.

An open air Chapel area is set aside for spiritual services and meditation.

Hiking is ideal at Grey Wolf, with trails for an afternoon ramble with your Beavers to those used for the 25 Km Backpacker's Challenge, and everything in between.

For Survival training or 4 season camping in the seclusion of the woods, take advantage of the large wooded areas surrounding the Lodges and along the trails. A ring road offers a park like setting for camping south of the small field.

You may want to take an overnight hike to Moon Lake, or camp in a quiet clearing on the other side of the creek or beaver pond.

From early Spring to late Fall, enjoy the wonders of nature, Beavers in the pond, and woodland flowers. Find the Sugar Maples by their bright red leaves in the fall. Listen for frogs, a woodpecker, or the many other forest creatures that inhabit Grey Wolf all year long.

A limited supply of Cross Country skies and boots are available for the campers that might forget theirs, or may need a dry pair of boots.

	Grey Wolf Scout Camp is owned and operated by Scouts Canada - Thunder Bay Area Grey Wolf Scout Camp is available for use by all Scouting, Non-Scouting charitable and non-profit groups. Groups not covered by Scouts Canada Insurance are required to supply an insurance liability certificate. To assist in planning your visit to Grey Wolf, consult the reservation listing. From the junction of Highways 11-17, 61, and Arthur Street:

South on Highway 61, 10.5 Km to Hacquoil Road
Turn Left (South) on Hacquoil Road, travel South 2 Km;
Right onto Boundary Drive, travel West 2.7 Km;
Turn Left on Falls Road, travel South 1.7 Km.
Grey Wolf gate is just South of the first intersection, (Boy Scout Road) on Falls Road.

From the West on Highway 11-17:

14 Km East of Kakabeka Falls, (and East of the weigh scales) turn South on Highway 130;
Travel South (and West) 12.5 Km to Junction Highway 61.
Turn right onto Highway 61and immediately left onto Wilderness Road;
Travel South 1 Km to Boundary Road;
Turn left, travel 2 Km East to Falls Road;
Turn right (South) onto Falls Road, travel South 1.7 Km.
Grey Wolf gate is just South of the intersection, (Boy Scout Road) on Falls Road.

From the USA (or South Gillies):

From Canadian Customs, Travel 38 Km North on Highway 61. (about 23 miles. Boy Scout Road is 1.2 Km North of Junction Highway 608.)
Turn right (East) onto Boy Scout Road;
Travel 3.2 Km East to Falls Road;
Turn right (South) onto Falls Road.
Grey Wolf gate is just South of the intersection, (Boy Scout Road) on Falls Road.
