Who Are We?

"The Northwestern Ontario Women's Centre is a non-profit, community based, feminist* organization. We rely on donations and government funding to maintain an accessible location and to respond to the needs of Northwestern Ontario women."

Resource Centre:

A large, unique and up to date collection of books, videos, reports and magazines by and about a wide range of women's needs and interests.

Community Education:

We work to increase public understanding and awareness of issues that have an impact upon women, such as violence, poverty, sexism, racism, homophobia, reproductive rights, health, sexual orientation, child care, the environment, global and third world issues, etc., through media work, workshops, lectures and informal talks

Individual and Community Advocacy:

We provide support and advocacy for individual women who encounter difficulty dealing with personal, administrative or legal issues, usually involving violence, poverty or the legal system.

Political Action:

We take women's concerns to local, provincial and national committees and consultations so that people who make laws, policy and decisions are aware of the reality women's lives in Northwestern Ontario.  We lobby all levels of government for social change.

Empowerment:

Our mission is to empower women by providing a safe and supportive environment to explore their needs.

* The Centre understands feminism to mean: Women working together, changing the structures, the processes and the people who oppress them while empowering all women in their personal life, in the community and society as a whole to exemplify mutual respect and the capabilities and rights of all women.
