SAR Actual November 6, 2004 - ELT at Thunder Bay Airport

Case Number 2486

At approximately 0600 local time, NOASARA received a call from JRCC Trenton requesting the investigation of an ELT signal in the Thunder Bay Airport vicinity.  By 0635, Peter Huneau was at the Patterson Hangar and tracking the ELT signal.  The signal appeared to be coming from the east end of the field  and eventually led to the Confederation College Hangar vicinity.

With the assistance of several early morning flight students, the in-service aircraft were checked and found to be OK.  However, a strong signal appeared to be emanating from the vicinity of the DC-9.  While the College Dispatcher was trying to locate the ELT on the DC-9, it was discovered that an unserviceable aircraft, C-GYHE, was emitting the signal.  The ELT was turned "Off" and left "Off" at 0810 local time.  The dispatcher, Steven Pearson, was to have the aircraft and ELT checked.
