A simulated SAR exercise was planned for Saturday, August 13, 2005. In efforts to assist in the search for a missing Marathon, Ontario pilot, the exercise would consist of a "Track Crawl" from Thunder Bay to Wawa via Nipigon, Terrace Bay, and Marathon with a stop in Wawa for food and fuel. A thorough pre-flight briefing took place and the necessary paperwork was completed.
Weather was partly cloudy with scattered showers.
