I was not particularly computer literate when I started with Red Hat 5.0 linux. Slackware was my second attempt at linux and it remains my favourite distro. Ubuntu and any of the other distros based on Debien REFUSE to boot up on my desktop but Slackware never fails to deliver. Now Slackware is on my desktop and also on my laptop with all the files sychronized for effective backups.
Amaya - Amaya is a complete WYSIWYG web authoring environment with limited browsing capabilities. I use Amaya and Slackware Linux to edit the Nitesky web site. There is a Slackware package for Amaya at Alien Bob's Slackbuild Repository.
DistroWatch - Put the fun back into computing. Find a flavour of Linux or BSD at DistroWatch.
Firefox - This award-winning web browser is my personal favourite. It is included with Slackware Linux.
Forums:
- This is THE
Slackware Support Forum. If you have general Slackware-related
questions or need help, this is a great place to join in discussions with a
user community that's friendly and eager to help. You really need to be
patient to find anything here as there is no rhyme or reason to this forum.
Posts are not grouped according to topic so good luck finding anything.
- The
LinuxPackages Forum is dedicated to Slackware Linux. It is a fine forum
that is active and up to date. Posts are divided and grouped logically
into topicsso you can find things easily.
F-PROT - I use F-Prot to keep my Slackware Linux Operating System virus free. Although Linux is virtually immune to viruses one can never be too careful. Besides, F-Prot for Linux is FREE.

Install Slackware:

KDE or the K Desktop Environment, is a network transparent contemporary desktop
environment for UNIX workstations. KDE seeks to fulfill the need for an easy
to use desktop for UNIX workstations, similar to desktop environments found on
Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems. Because of KDE I had an
easier time when making the move from Windows to Slackware Linux.
- This site is dedicated to the the
enrichment and enhancement of the Slackware Linux operating system.
Moving from Windows to Linux:
Robby Workman's Slackware Packages - Lots of Slackware packages plus their build scripts.
Set Up Linux (Post Install tips):
- Slackware was started by Patrick Volkerding
in late 1992, and initially released to the world on July 17, 1993. It is the
oldest continuously maintained version and was the first Linux distribution to
achieve widespread use.
Wicd - Wicd (pronounced wicked) is an open source wired and wireless network manager for Linux which aims to provide a simple interface to connect to networks with a wide variety of settings. I like it better than anything else I have tried. You can find it in the extra directory starting with Slackware 13.0.
- Wine Is Not an Emulator but it plays
one on TV. Wine enables Linux, Mac, BSD, and Solaris
users to run Windows applications without a copy of Microsoft Windows. Think
of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. There is a
Slackware package for Wine at Alien Bob's Slackbuild
Repository.
- Xfce, the Cholesterol Free desktop
environment, is designed for productivity. It loads and executes applications
fast, and is easy on system resources. The small footprint means that you can
use your older computer effectively with *NIX long after M$ Windows has
outgrown it. Xfce embodies the traditional UNIX philosophy of modularity and
re-usability. It consists of a number of components that together provide the
full functionality of the desktop environment. They are packaged separately
and you can pick and choose from the available packages to customize your
personal working environment.
You can download a nice group of XFCE4 goodies from Robby Workman's Slackware Packages.
