My writing is eclectic and has included: a humorous
newspaper column, creative nonfiction, short stories in two Northwestern
Ontario anthologies, poetry in Christian and literary magazines, a chapbook
of poems and the first in a series of fantasy novels for young readers.
The variety probably reflects my varied taste in reading, from Thurber
to Doestoevsky to C.S.Lewis.
I see writing, along with all art forms, as entertainment
with meaning. Or, as the writer of Ecclesiastes put it, "He chose his words
to give pleasure, but what he wrote was the honest truth." If writing,
even humour, does not reflect some aspect of truth back to the reader,
it is a waste of paper and ink.
C.S. Lewis' work has undoubtedly been the greatest
influence on my thinking and, ultimately, my writing. His conviction
that truth is not elusive, but knowable and attainable has been a shaping
force on my understanding, and my desire to communicate through clear,
accessible writing.
