The RMYC has accomplished many projects in the past, so we'd like to share some of our recent successful activities we are proud of and hope to inspire everyone with!

Southside Friday Barbeques 2007

Here is an excerpt written by Martin, the RMYC President:

Hey everyone, we hosted our regular community BBQ called The Southside Event on Friday last week. We served food, played music, and participated in sports with members of the neighbourhood. It is an event to engage the people in our community to meet, talk, and to create positive experiences with one another and to build a sense of community in this rather bleak area of Thunder Bay.

We had a pretty good turnout the last week as more organizations are hearing of this event and wanting to help out. We have the support of the City of Thunder Bay, who lets us borrow some sporting equipment, other community organizations, who advertise this event, as well as the Police Department, who provides us with security and the location (it is beside a neighbourhood police station). Around 70 people showed up for an evening of hotdogs, entertainment, ice cream, soccer, road hockey, and graffiti (on wooden boards). Everyone had great fun. I could see that the whole area is becoming a more homelier and welcoming place as people began to socialize and to have fun with each other. It turned out awesome!

By the end of it, I cannot help but reflect bittersweetly by comparing the impact of our event and on the desolate situation in our neighboorhood. Some kids as well as adults were eating as if it were their only meal that day, while others gathered for our activities free of charge. Perhaps our event it is not an absolute solution to the situation, but it is definitely helping the community positively.
