TYPS Conference!

From March 27 - 30, 2008, Ashley Atatise, Nefry Falla, Pauline Fogarty, and Martin Zhang representatives the RMYC at the Town Youth Participation Strategies (TYPS) 10th annual conference in St. George, outside Brantford. The event was held at the Tim Horton's Onondaga Camp and attracted nearly two hundred delegates from youth centres across Canada.

Martin and Pauline were peer leaders and facilitated some of the workshops. Moffat Makuto the executive director of the RMYC's parent organization, the Multicultural Association of Northwestern Ontario, who sits on the TYPS board also attended the conference. In addition to providing the youth with leadership and organizational skills, the participants also discussed ways to sustain youth centres. Delegates from Newfoundland talked about how their provincial government was funding youth centres. Everyone wanted to learn how to lobby other provincial governments to do the same.

The conference was a great opportunity to network, and share ideas on best practices from other youth centres. More information on the conference can be found on the TYPS website: www.typs.com

Commemorating March 21!

This year the RMYC made and distributed thousands of Multicultural Bows to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The bows made of black, red, white, and yellow ribbons intertwined to symbolize the beauty of the human race united in harmony. There was a campaign to distributed the bows to political leaders and all high schools in Thunder Bay to wear as a sign of commitment to ending racial discrimination.

On Wednesday, March 19, Diversity Thunder Bay hosted a community breakfast at the Victoria Inn to commemorate March 21. Speakers included Mayor, Lynn Peterson, Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Stan Beardy, Ontario Judge Joyce Pelletier, and representatives from the Public and Catholic School Boards. Ten members of the RMYC attended the breakfast. All the people at the breakfast were given a ribbon. READ MORE!

Computers at the Youth Centre

The Youth Centre has computers for youths to use during the day and after hours. Since September, 2008, we have two part-time interns supervising our computer site. They are available to assist computer users on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. They are also present on Saturdays from 3 to 6 p.m.

The Centre is open during the day and late evenings, but there is no direct help outside the interns' set hours.

Please feel free to drop by and use the computers for assignments, e-mails, games or just to browse the net. There are, however some limitations on what the computers can be used for. This means nothing illegal, or that promotes negative lifestyles. READ MORE.
