The small island of Skull Rock was expanded to seven times its original size by constructing a breakwall around the islet and filling the inner areas of the rock. Eventually large enough to have a power house, a shaft house, boarding houses for the single men and even a small library.
Just a few kilometers off shore, it is now being considered for a Lake Superior marine santuary.
The Company slip, now a Government dock, and the Store figure promanently in the life and most pictures of Silver Islet.
The Silver Islet Store was purchased by the Saxberg Family of Thunder Bay in 1988. Work to restore this landmark to its original condition is continuing. The store is, once again, the centre of the community.
Carpentry Shop when acquired by Connie & Robert, 2001
The carpentry shop for the Silver Islet mine dates from around 1868. In the 1960's and 70's it served as a community centre and dance hall for the summer residents. It now is the Silver Islet Bed and Breakfast.
SILVER ISLET CEMETERY CIRCA 1870 - 1937
This plaque commemorates the more than sixty men, women and children of silver islet who were buried on this site. Their gravesites usually consisted of headstones carved from wood and were enclosed by picket fences. While these physical memorials are disappearing, we continue to remember and honour these individuals and their contributions to the formation of our community.
