1990 VW Westfalia 2.0 litre I4 Conversion – Auto Transmission Shift Modification

*  This modification alters the automatic transmission shift points to better match the I4 engine.  The end result for me was shifting now at 3000 rpm under medium load, and 6000 at full throttle...perfect.  In city driving, the shifting from 2nd to 3rd occurs later but if you back off the throttle, it drops nicely into 3rd before 3000 rpm.  I would highly recommend this mod.

*  Here's a PDF file provided by David Milo, scanned from KEP's instructions.

*  You should replace this O-ring sealing the governor cap... mine was pinched and leaking from the factory!

Here is what the governor looks like with its cap removed.  Note that the AFT fill tube was in the way and had to be loosened and lifted slightly to allow the governor to be moved.

*  Here's the governor after.  The trim was done with a Dremel fixed with a  small cut off wheel.  I then rinsed the unit in solvent and blew it out with compressed air to remove any metal dust.
