This is fourth design I’ve built, and
definitely the best. I tow this
behind the Westfalia on extended trips or my Scirocco. It has been towed at least 50 000 km.
The trailer is designed to hold two
windsurfers internally plus sails, masts, booms etc. It can hold four more boards on the racks,
or a mix of boards, two bikes, and kayaks.
This iteration allows the lid to be opened whilst loaded with
gear.

The weight of gear attached to the racks is
borne on the trailer frame, not the box, so the racks can be loaded with
hundreds of pounds without damaging the box.
At some point I’ll redo the frame in aluminum. Originally the box was ¼ inch marine
plywood reinforced with carbon fibre, and was wonderfully light, but broke
with a lot of weight on top. Now it’s
skinned with aluminium with a welded steel frame to help with it’s other role
as a utility trailer.
Since these pictures, I’ve extended the
tongue 24 inches to accommodate our sea kayaks.
