After sitting for long periods of time there is an uncomfortable delay in full oil pressure showing up on the VDO gauge. There is also about a 1 to 2 second delay on cold starts. The best solution for this is to install a pre-oiler/accumulator. The Accusump 1 litre unit is basically a hydraulic cylinder with compressed air on one side, and oil on the other. When empty, the cylinder is pre-charged with 10 psi of air. As the engine runs, a one way valve allows oil to flow into the unit and pressurizes to the engine's maximum oil pressure. At cold idle for this engine, that's 80 psi. The unit has a schraeder valve to allow the air pre-charge to be adjusted, and a gauge to monitor pressure. I have installed an electric valve that when de-energized, will allow oil to flow into the unit only...not out. When energized, the valve allows pressurized oil to flow out of the unit into the sandwich adapter plate, which effectively pressurizes the oil system from the oil pump and up through the oil galleries to the crank, rods, hydraulic lifters etc. If left energized, the valve will allow the system to work as an accumulator, feeding oil back into the system whenever oil pressure drops. Accusump suggests that the valve is wired to the ignition, and provides a switch for manual override. So if the switch is on, and the ignition key is turned to the run position, a slight pause allows pre-oil before starting the engine. My VDO oil pressure gauge jumps to about 4 bar (60psi) as the engine is pre-oiled and then slowly drops. At this point the engine can be started. By toggling the switch off after a cold start, the unit will pressurize to over 90psi. If the switch is left off, the next pre-oil will have 90psi on hand.
The sandwich adapter is CNC aluminum. It allows connection of the Accusump, with one hose, to the intake side of the oil filter. Location of the manual override switch. |
