"The ability to write a good family history belongs to only a favoured few; it is not given to every man to select with keen and true judgment the fittest facts, and then construct with them a terse yet interesting record, not of a nation, or province, or even of a parish, but of a single family. I cannot lay claim to this gift, but I am not convinced that I am at any special disadvantage in having to write the annals of a humble race." This site began as a place for me to share what I know about the history of the Apperley family in Canada. It has expanded to include information about other related families. The links on the left lead to short narratives about the respective families. Family group sheets for the entire database are located under the "Family Names" links at the top of the page. You can find Thomas and Hannah Apperley and family in the 1851 census courtesy of the Ontario GenWeb, where the name has been transcribed as "Sperly". If you are looking in the index to the 1871 census at the Library and Archives Canada, you will find the widow Hannah Apperley indexed as "Aperly" and her son Thomas Apperley indexed as "Haperby". I hope to add more information to the site as time permits. Don't hesitate to email me if you would like more details about any of the names listed here. I look forward to your queries and comments. Gerry Apperly "To those whose sordid temper leads them to disregard everything not immediately conducive to the accumulation of wealth or the gratification of appetite, the search after one's ancestors among damp tombstones, musty registers, and antiquated wills, may appear the ultimatum of human folly. But he who engages in the pursuit with intelligent zeal has an intellectual pabulum of which such men little dream, a pleasure far surpassing the excitement of the chase, the gratification of the palate, or the aggrandizement of riches." |
