Structure and Properties (SCH4U Unit 5)

Primary Learning Goals

  □

I can explain how experimental observations and inferences by Ernest Rutherford and Niels Bohr contributed to the development of the planetary model of the atom.

  □

I can describe the quantum mechanical model of the atom in terms of shells (energy levels), subshells (sublevels), orbitals, and electron spin.

  □

I can draw electron-energy level diagrams, full electron configurations, and shorthand electron configurations for atoms and ions, and use these configurations to explain ionic charges, anomalies, paramagnetism, and bonding.

  □

I can draw Lewis structures for molecules and polyatomic ions, including formal charges.

  □

I can predict the shapes of molecules and polyatomic ions using the VSEPR model, and draw diagrams to represent their shapes.
