January 21 to April 30, 2012

Urban Infill-Art In The Core, celebrating it's 6th year; the next evolution of creative possibilities.  The idea is to help revitalize our downtown core by capitalizing on assets of art and culture and linking and reinforcing connections through accessible empty spaces and existing arts, commercial business/social spaces.  With vision and innovative arts and business we can fill up the empty spaces in our downtown and help to connect and create that unique niche of an urban arts and entertainment district.  The projects comprised of multi-disciplinary and new media/multi-arts by national, international and regional artists will work to enhance our level of arts programming by involving all facets and mediums of the contemporary arts and involving innovative new media technologies.  Premised upon the concept of creative cities partnerships we will utilize our multi-functional gallery spaces as a creative hub for generating collective/collaborative projects not only in our gallery space but in empty / underutilized / established / commercial / art spaces throughout the downtown north core of Thunder Bay.

Re-discover your North Core Waterfront District through contemporary art! The projects begin January 21 with Derelicte 4 and continue through February and culminates in March with a flurried and frenzied art affair.  The results of last years Urban Infill - Art In The Core projects were highly successful in terms of statistics and participatory results: 17 Art Projects, 350 multi-disciplinary artists (most regional as well as critically acclaimed national/international artists), 15 downtown locations, 150 volunteers, 35 businesses and an audience of 5,000+ over the duration of the projects.

MUTATE BRITAIN - Video Presentation

Britain - International

Dec 2, 2011 to Jan 14, 2012

Mutate Britain is a collaboration between the legendary Mutoid Waste Company and the Cordy House Family, Together they create ground-breaking art events that use surprising locations to produce strikingly unique atmospheres. A monster of a street art show, cheekily dubbed MuTATE Britain, ran amok in London, leaving tens of thousands of gobsmacked visitors in its aftermath. Billed as an “interactive multimedia pile-up”, this free, non-corporate extravaganza didn’t disappoint. In a city where more conventional art exhibitions are as commonplace as rats in biology labs, the work featured here leapt out like some orgiastic post-apocalyptic cybernetic experiment. MuTATE Britain showcased a gargantuan collection of some of the best and most alternative street artists, grafitti artists, kinetic and sculptural artists, live performances, video art/projections, music/sound and installations. London's major ANTI-CORPORATE art show, literally in the streets....start muTATE-ing!

FAKING IT
JOHN KISSICK
Guelph - international

Oct 14, 2011 to Nov 19, 2011

Internationally known artist and multi-award winning abstract painter, educator, writer John Kissick is a man of many talents, and in the past decade he has built a reputation with his abstract paintings that use an encyclopedic array of painted motifs and textures drawn from a global pool of visual representation.  In an artist statement he writes “Max Ernst coined the term ‘fever vision’ in the early 1920s to describe a kind of visual delirium and psychological slippage that can occur in front of certain kinds of visual assemblages.  I am finding myself increasingly attracted to this notion.  ” Why? “ Because of … a certain heightened loss of control on the part of the viewer in attempting to apprehend meaning.  ” And because it also implies illness, rapture-apt metaphors for the historical predicament of abstract painting."  Kissick is Director, School of Fine Art and Music, College of Arts, University of Guelph, and has an extensive CV.  A critically acclaimed artist who has been featured in major galleries / magazines worldwide, Kissick is also an award winning critical art writer and contributor to Canadian Art Magazine.  Gala Opening Reception and Artist Talk with invited artist John Kissick.

KILL YOUR IDOLS
Documentary Film - New York 30 Years of Alternative Music
No Wave to Present

June 24, 2011 to July 30, 2011

Kill Your Idols - A must see 75 min. Documentary art film on alternative music in NYC originating in the 70’s.  Scott Crary is a film director and writer based in New York City.  Crary filmed, produced, edited, and directed the film Kill Your Idols, a documentary examining three decades of New York art punk bands.  Kill Your Idols features such noted no wave and art punk bands as sonic Youth, Swans, DNA, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Suicide, Black Dice, Gogol Bordello, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars, among others.  The film received the award for Best Documentary at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival and was subsequently screened at over 50 international film festivals.  This is about anti-music, atonal and extreme, but very much in step with the punk ethos of breaking down the barrier between artist and audience.

THE GREAT CONTEMPORARY ART BUBBLE
Ben Lewis - London UK - Documentary Art Film

May  14, 2011 to June 11, 2011

The Great Contemporary Art Bubble - A must see 60 minute Documentary art film about the business of art by UK reporter Ben Lewis.  Lewis investigates the cynical romance between capitalism and the art world through an economic lens.  The award winning and entertaining documentary acts as an economic analysis of the high end contemporary art market, in a way that was Lewis’s art-critical point, that most of the art in the film did not merit being assessed within the framework of art criticism, and should only be considered as products in a market.  Doubting the compelling idea that capitalism nurtures art and creates a free-trade zone for ideas and feelings, he suggested that the current art market might actually not be good for either making meaningful art or for democracy and freedom of expression.  Critics commented that the film  "...made them think about how much they appreciated small, artist-run gallery spaces sustained by dedicated individuals who are happy for the privilege of living on creativity, no matter how small their bubble might be."

RIVER
LENKA NOVAKOVA
czech republic/montreal - international

Mar 26, 2011 to Apr 30, 2011

Czech Republic born, Internationally known artist Lenka Novakova's presentation at Definitely Superior Art Gallery comprises of a fully immersive 3 dimensional video installation.  River features up to 20 large conical structures fabricated from clear cast glass and mono-filament.  The cones are arranged in a concentric formation through the length of the gallery at which point projected images are discharged through the transparent and opaque materials allowing the image to be simultaneously visible and fleeting.  It attempts to transform the entire space into a beautifully sparkling submersive experience of a river current running through.  Her practice is concerned with an ephemeral poetic quality, a moment of recreation and reflective thought through constructed environments, simple technologies and moving light; with crossover in cinema and theatre technologies.  Novakova, based in Quebec, received her MFA from Concordia, recipient of Canada Council/Ontario Arts Council and Quebec Council arts grants and has done major residencies throughout the world, she has shown throughout Canada and Internationally. All part of DefSup's “Urban Infill  Art in the Core” projects.

THE ERUDITION
KELLY RICHARDSON
london uk - international

Mar 26, 2011 to Apr 30, 2011

Internationally known London UK based artist Kelly Richardson's artistic practice falls under the category of media-art.  Her consistently original and innovative video work explores the latest in cinematic innovation and transmedia storytelling.  Mining the aesthetics of cinema and science fiction, The Erudition - video installation presents a lunar-esque looking landscape with what appears to be an unlikely monument or proposal, consisting of holo-graphic trees blowing in fictional wind.  Is this slightly malfunctioning display a forgotten site for proposed colonization?  Better yet, is this some kind of alien artwork?  Richardson has exhibited internationally from the Busan Biennale, Korea to the New Frontiers at the Sundance Film Festival, featured artist at the Americans for The Arts National Arts Awards,  The Art Gallery of Ontario and recently in Canadian Art Magazines 25th Anniversary as one of the top 10 artists to watch for... Internationally. All part of DefSup's “Urban Infill  Art in the Core” projects

Definitely Superior wishes to emphasize to the arts community - at - large an awareness of the diverse nature of artists and an appreciation of the contemporary arts in the region of Northwestern Ontario, and allow access by members and collectives to develop shows and art production as well as a place to exhibit.  This month features Sarah Furlotte, in her first solo exhibition comprising of exciting new contemporary painting works and  box artforms in various mediums.  As Furlotte explains, she likes to approach a piece of work uninhibited, free of constraints, throwing paint on the paper and has learned it takes longer to free yourself than to attempt to render realism.  The icons in her work develop their meaning as she places them in context with each other.  This forms the language of her work, that she uses to explain what she filters out of life.  Furlotte is a well recognized artist in the world of visual / theatre / film / performative arts and is a recipient of a Northern Ontario Arts Council Creation Grant.

FROZEN IN TIME
NATHALIE DAOUST

Quebec - international - hand coloured b&w photography

Oct 22 to Nov 20, 2010

Whether in New York, Tokyo or Berlin, Nathalie Daoust has always asserted a child's contempt for reality.  This Canadian photographer, born and raised in Montreal, has devoted all of her art to unveiling the secrets hidden beneath the apparent stability of life.  The aesthetic of Frozen in Time continues and enriches her visual exploration at the border between dream and reality.  Her artistic treatment of black and white photographs taken with a pinhole camera and subsequently hand-coloured, illustrates her exploration of that which is found in the blurred image, the ghostly shadows and the blotted contours.  ”Daoust explores the indefinable realm between truth, fantasy and the human desire of escapism.  Daoust's artistic journey has taken her from Japan and China to Spain, France, Brazil and Austrailia.  She is truly a critically acclaimed international artist with an extensive CV and has been featured in major galleries / magazine publications and is a multi-award winning photographer worldwide.  Gala Opening Reception and a harvest of art / musical performances with The Bay City Sound Collective and two additional shows.

BIG, BANG, BOOM!
BLU

Italy - international - stopmotion street animation - video installatoin

Oct 22 to Nov 20, 2010

BLU is an Italian artist who has deliberately concealled his real identity, however we do know he lives in Bologna Italy and has been active in the street art scene since 1999.  The list of the places where BLU has left his trace is impressively long, and his work is critically acclaimed internationally from the Tate Gallery London UK, to the streets of Sao Paulo Brazil.  Blu is a painter in the landscape, urban or industrial.  He always tries to communicate with the society which inhabits those spaces, searching for the uniqueness of each place.  His murals and his videos are given free to the public space of the cities and on the world wide web.  BLU’s aesthetic search is motivated by a belief in an open source philosophy, persistent in its anarchical revolt against contemporary art conventions and unique in beauty, and is undoubtedly one of the most interesting in our visual culture today.  Join us for a screening of Big Bang Boom! - not to be missed.

ELEMENTS
QUENTIN MAKI

new mixed media works - painting

June 5 to July 3, 2010

An initiative of Definitely Superior Art Gallery to allow access by members and collectives to develop shows and art production as well as a place to exhibit.  This month features Quentin Maki, MFA, a well recognized contemporary artist whose current work stems from a primary interest in combining found objects with traditional painting materials.  The objects have been chosen not only for their formal elements but often have a personal significance as well.  The addition of 3-D objects into Maki’s compositional layout has resulted in works that put additional emphasis on structure.  This structure provides a formal equilibrium to the responsive mark making often present in his work.  Sculptural objects naturally pose a physical presence, while drawn or painted images are more suggested.  Combining an interest in mark making and tactile surface treatment with found objects has allowed more exploration into a wider range of possibilities through these recent works

TRANSMISSION - CHRISTOPHER STONES

Oct 17 to Nov 15, 2008

An initiative of Definitely Superior Art Gallery to allow access by members and collectives to develop shows and art production as well as a place to exhibit.  This month features Chris Stones and Quentin Maki in an individual yet collaborative exhibition in galleries 2 and 3.  Chris Stones' approach to art construction is with intuitive, spontaneous and qualified abandon.  It is an art of parts that is drawn largely from materials quarried over years, and often from waterfronts.  Transmission, the working title for this exhibit, hints at an infatuated appreciation for vintage machinery that Quentin and he share.  Definitely Superior wishes to emphasize to the arts community-at-large an awareness of the diverse nature of artists and an appreciation of the contemporary arts in the region of Northwestern Ontario.  Join us for a Gala Opening Reception with Art - Music Performance - Refreshments and an additional show opening with the DefSup Annual-Regional Juried Exhibition with artists in attendance.

NEW PAINTING - QUENTIN MAKI

Oct 17 to Nov 15, 2008

An initiative of Definitely Superior Art Gallery to allow access by members and collectives to develop shows and art production as well as a place to exhibit.  This month features Chris Stones and Quentin Maki in an individual yet collaborative exhibition in galleries 2 and 3. Quentin Maki describes his paintings as visceral and serve as a record of events [movements] that have transpired, and culminating towards a completed image. He says of his abstract paintings; the expectation of a final product drives him to create, however, the end result is usually unexpected.  A  personal voyage into the unknown is where he feels the least comfort, but at the same time most compelled to explore.

100 STORIES ABOUT MY GRANDMOTHER - PETER KINGSTONE
VIDEO INSTALLATION - TORONTO

Sept 6 to Oct 4, 2008

COMMUNITY PROMOTION PARTNERS:
AIDS THUNDER BAY
PRIDE CENTRAL (LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY)

Award winning Toronto-based artist Peter Kingstone works with video and photography, often experimenting with narrative to explore ideas of personal history and the intangible nature of truth.  Kingstone’s new documentary, 100 Stories About My Grandmother, is a video installation weaving together portraits of male sex trade workers [international interviews] telling stories about their grandmothers.  Sharing family stories may seem banal, but inviting sex trade workers to do so becomes a way of including them in a society that is all too frequently eager to reject them.  Audiences are invited to spend time listening to the thoughts and memories of this marginalized community.  Kingstone holds a Philosophy degree from Trent University and MFA from York.  His work has been shown across Canada and throughout the U.S.A.  He is a winner of the best solo exhibition in an alternative space at the Toronto Untitled Awards 2004.  Artists-Peter Kingstone and Charlie/Marjorie Clayton present new works with photography/video around the curatorial thread of Communication.

KELLY PHILLIPS - ROAD RUNES

ETCHINGS / INSTALLATION - VANCOUVER

June 7 to July 19, 2008

Vancouver Artist Kelly Phillips presents a unique installation of large graphite etchings and pewter castings of Highway 587 to Silver Islet. By bringing graphite and paper to bear on 587 through direct pressure frottages, Phillips attempts, like long ago monks and alchemists to “read” the story of the road revealed on its surface. Its “material failure”, as geologists would call it, is a record of the struggle for scarce resources as much as the impact of extreme weather.  The “road runes” record the environmental conditions of northern Ontario as well as its social and political geography.  Gala Opening Reception of three exhibitions and performance art: Art + Refreshments + Music.  See FLY ON THE WALL - [downtown northcore alley’s will be a place of discovery with art performances - take the guided tour] - and there will be exquisite birthday cupcakes, artist talks and much much more... It all starts Sat. June 7 @ 7:00pm during The City of Thunder Bay Great Weekend / Harbour Arts Festival!

DAN BRAULT - QUEBEC CITY

MONGRELIZATION PAINTING

February 1 to March 1, 2008

Quebec artist, Dan Brault’s painting practice is constructed on a recurrent interest in the confrontation of eclectic imagery, fascinated by the interconnections created when two or more paintings are brought together to form a mongrel. Brault employs different image genres [hard edge, comic book illustration, serigraphy, gestural brushwork, etc.] to investigate the rapport of visual entities and initiate dialogues between different image styles, creating complex visual puzzles. Much like the strategies of the techno musician who samples and mixes, Brault cuts across the conventions of comics, portraiture, still life and geometric abstraction, the pictorial codes juxtaposed by the artist become a new visual phrasing. Dan Brault has presented his work in Quebec and across Canada-recently in the Toronto International Art Fair and is represented by the Peak Gallery in Toronto. Definitely Superior invites you to an Artstravaganza with 3 new exhibitions opening-Art, Refreshments, Artist Talks with [Dan Brault/Quebec City+Jane Adeney/Hamilton]. The artist wishes to thank the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec.
