URBAN INFILL-ART IN THE CORE
20 PROJECTS - 350+ ARTISTS - 15+ VENUES
January 30 to March 31, 2008

Urban Infill-Art In The Core; the next evolution of creative possibilities. The idea is to revitalize our downtown core by capitalizing on assets of art and culture and reinforce connections through accessible empty spaces and existing arts, commercial business/social places. The idea is that with a combined vision of innovative arts and business we can fill up the empty spaces in our downtown and help to connect and create a unique district of urban arts and entertainment. The projects which are comprised of multi-disciplinary and new media/multi-arts by national, international and regional artists will work to enhance our level of arts programming by involving all facets and mediums of the contemporary arts and involving innovative new media technologies. Premised upon the concept of creative cities partnerships we will utilize our multi-functional gallery spaces as a creative hub for generating collective / collaborative projects not only in our gallery space but in empty / underutilized /established / new commercial / art spaces throughout the downtown north core of Thunder Bay. It begins! January 30 and continues to March 31, 2008

SOLOMON (Thunder Bay)
CORE ZINE LAUNCH
6 SPOKEN WORD/PERFORMANCES
Wednesday January 30, 2008 @ 8pm
All ages $5 @ Gallery

An evocative cocktail of music, art, performance and big screen video projections at the next inspiring multi-arts edition of ART B-LAB, featuring musical performances by: Hamilton’s own indie rock deity Wax Mannequin-his live performances are unequalled with a sense of conviction and intensity. Adeney is one of the hardest-touring artists in the Canadian indie-rock scene performing with a dramatic and theatrical style, a must to see. The Kettle Black [Vancouver] a one man sound experience aka Nick Johannes’ music has been described as "experimental/folk/punk" but that list falls a little short - at times danceable, at times jarring, definitely unique. Solomon provides another one man solid performance of intelligent and poetic hiphop/spokenword. See and hear diverse spoken word and performative art by Tanya Elchuk, Renee Terpstra, Amy Crnkovic, Cameron Willis, Douglas Livingston, and Jolene Simko-Core 6 literary Zine launch-refreshments will be served. 8PM sharp all ages welcome-ID required-$5 at the door-Music with a twist! DAN BRAULT - QUEBEC CITY
MONGRELIZATION PAINTING
February 1 to March 1, 2008
Opening: Friday, February 1 @ 7pm

Quebec artist, Dan Brault’s painting practice is constructed on a recurrent interest in the confrontation of eclectic imagery, fascinated by the interconnections created when two or more paintings are brought together to form a mongrel. Brault employs different image genres [hard edge, comic book illustration, serigraphy, gestural brushwork, etc.] to investigate the rapport of visual entities and initiate dialogues between different image styles, creating complex visual puzzles. Much like the strategies of the techno musician who samples and mixes, Brault cuts across the conventions of comics, portraiture, still life and geometric abstraction, the pictorial codes juxtaposed by the artist become a new visual phrasing. Dan Brault has presented his work in Quebec and across Canada-recently in the Toronto International Art Fair and is represented by the Peak Gallery in Toronto. Definitely Superior invites you to an Artstravaganza with 3 new exhibitions opening-Art, Refreshments, Artist Talks with [Dan Brault/Quebec City+Jane Adeney/Hamilton]. The artist wishes to thank the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec.

KELLY PHILLIPS - ROAD RUNES
ETCHINGS / INSTALLATION - VANCOUVER
June 7 to July 19, 2008
Opening: Saturday, June 7 @ 7pm

Vancouver Artist Kelly Phillips presents a unique installation of large graphite etchings and pewter castings of Highway 587 to Silver Islet. By bringing graphite and paper to bear on 587 through direct pressure frottages, Phillips attempts, like long ago monks and alchemists to “read” the story of the road revealed on its surface. Its “material failure”, as geologists would call it, is a record of the struggle for scarce resources as much as the impact of extreme weather. The “road runes” record the environmental conditions of northern Ontario as well as its social and political geography. BUMPSTERS OF BANJUL-MARJORIE CLAYTON
PHOTOGRAPHY - LONDON ENGLAND
Sept 6 to Oct 4, 2008

Marjorie Clayton formally of Thunder Bay returns from London England with her award winning internationally recognized photography dealing with global socio-political ideas/concepts, to exhibit alongside her father, Charlie Clayton-[one of DefSup’s founding members], a photographer of Northwestern Ontario’s urban and natural landscapes. A unique global meets regional show that celebrates former members making their international mark and DefSup’s 20th Anniversary! Bumpsters of Banjul [Gambia West Africa] is a series of poignant B&W photographs dealing with the marginalized people known as Bumpsters and their life as illegal hustlers in the tourist trade of Gambia, away from the tourist complex, at their homes with family and friends. Accompanied by quotes and other caption material, the viewer is given insight into the bumpsters and their lives as people fighting for survival rather than illegal hustlers in a society that shuns them. Artist Charlie/Marjorie Clayton and Peter Kingstone present new works with photography/video around the curatorial thread of Communication.

MEMORYSCAPES
- CHARLIE CLAYTON
PHOTOGRAPHY - THUNDER BAY
Sept 6 to Oct 4, 2008

Charlie Clayton, one of DefSup’s founding
members and one of the premiere photographers of Northwestern Ontario’s urban
and natural landscapes exhibits alongside his daughter and international artist
Marjorie Clayton. This is a unique global meets regional show that
celebrates former members making their international mark and DefSup’s 20th
Anniversary! Memoryscapes is a series of thought provoking B&W
photographs dealing with the idea of memories as an almost physical thing, as if
we could look into ourselves and "see" a landscape of memories through
images. There are many shadows in a memoryscape, It is full of mystery, It
is losing oneself in place, objects and people in Northwestern Ontario from long
ago... these memories are to be found echoing throughout Clayton’s
imagery. Artists-Charlie/Marjorie Clayton and Peter
Kingstone present new works with photography/video around the curatorial thread
of Communication.

STORIES ABOUT MY GRANDMOTHER - PETER KINGSTONE
VIDEO INSTALLATION - TORONTO
Sept 6 to Oct 4, 2008
COMMUNITY
PROMOTION PARTNERS:
AIDS THUNDER BAY
PRIDE CENTRAL (LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY)

Award winning Toronto-based artist Peter Kingstone works with video and photography, often experimenting with narrative to explore ideas of personal history and the intangible nature of truth. Kingstone’s new documentary, 100 Stories About My Grandmother, is a video installation weaving together portraits of male sex trade workers [international interviews] telling stories about their grandmothers. Sharing family stories may seem banal, but inviting sex trade workers to do so becomes a way of including them in a society that is all too frequently eager to reject them. Audiences are invited to spend time listening to the thoughts and memories of this marginalized community. Kingstone holds a Philosophy degree from Trent University and MFA from York. His work has been shown across Canada and throughout the U.S.A. He is a winner of the best solo exhibition in an alternative space at the Toronto Untitled Awards 2004. Artists-Peter Kingstone and Charlie/Marjorie Clayton present new works with photography/video around the curatorial thread of Communication.

TRANSMISSION - CHRISTOPHER STONES
Oct 17 to Nov 15, 2008

An initiative of Definitely Superior Art Gallery to allow access by members and collectives to develop shows and art production as well as a place to exhibit. This month features Chris Stones and Quentin Maki in an individual yet collaborative exhibition in galleries 2 and 3. Chris Stones' approach to art construction is with intuitive, spontaneous and qualified abandon. It is an art of parts that is drawn largely from materials quarried over years, and often from waterfronts. Transmission, the working title for this exhibit, hints at an infatuated appreciation for vintage machinery that Quentin and he share. Definitely Superior wishes to emphasize to the arts community-at-large an awareness of the diverse nature of artists and an appreciation of the contemporary arts in the region of Northwestern Ontario. Join us for a Gala Opening Reception with Art - Music Performance - Refreshments and an additional show opening with the DefSup Annual-Regional Juried Exhibition with artists in attendance.

NEW PAINTING - QUENTIN MAKI
Oct 17 to Nov 15, 2008

An initiative of Definitely Superior Art Gallery to allow access by members and collectives to develop shows and art production as well as a place to exhibit. This month features Chris Stones and Quentin Maki in an individual yet collaborative exhibition in galleries 2 and 3. Quentin Maki describes his paintings as visceral and serve as a record of events [movements] that have transpired, and culminating towards a completed image. He says of his abstract paintings; the expectation of a final product drives him to create, however, the end result is usually unexpected. A personal voyage into the unknown is where he feels the least comfort, but at the same time most compelled to explore.
