access
Microsoft Access is a member of the
Microsoft Office suite of business applications. As a
standalone database product, Access is relatively
inexpensive to own and use. Advanced users can relatively
easily setup their own databases with minimal training.
All of the database components can be kept in a single
file for ease of management and made accessible to
multiple simultaneous users. Access contains several
excellent wizards for users to start building tables,
queries forms and reports. The theoretical maximum size
of an Access database is 1 gigabyte, though the practical
limit is usually somewhat less.
Access is a highly recommended database product where
the size of the final database is not huge. For a small
company that does not maintain its own systems staff,
Access can be easily supported by an advanced user.
Management of the database and edits/additions to forms
and reports is relatively intuitive. Access also
interacts very well with the rest of the MS Office suite,
allows for powerful web publishing, and of course is
scalable up to more powerful databases like SQL Server.
