Crosman 1008 CO2 Pistol

By Todd Cooper

The Crosman 1008 is a low priced plastic repeater pistol with very few metal parts. Plastic parts include the frame, grips, trigger, 8 shot circular magazines, and several smaller parts. Does this make the pistol inaccurate and worthless? As always, I’ll let you decide.

I purchased the Crosman 1008 a few years ago as a fun, close distance, plinking pistol. Actually, my brother bought one too and these two repeaters sent a lot of lead down range during one warm summer. One of my favourite activities was hanging aluminum pop cans from a 6 foot horizontal string, which was tied between two trees. The 6 or 8 pop cans were hung from the pull tabs and spaced evenly across the span. A solid hit on a can, with a wadcutter, would result in 1-3 spins around the string. Continually hitting the same can would eventually cause a separation and the bottom would drop to the ground. Cool!

The only modification that I did to my 1008 was apply a dab of silicone sealant to the barrel to keep it from moving. Many of these pistols have barrels that rattle when you shake the pistol. The silicone is a quick and easy fix for this minor problem.

VELOCITY TESTS

The 1008 was purchased for rapid shooting and pop can blasting. High velocity was not something I expected, especially when rapid fire mode was used. With 7.9 grain Crosman Copperhead wadcutters the velocity would start off at 350-375 fps at 68-70F temperatures when using a fresh powerlet. After a few magazines of shooting the velocity would drop to 320-330 fps but accuracy was still quite acceptable. For top velocity I recommend a short 3 or 4 minute break after every magazine or two.

Shot count with my particular pistol always seemed to be around 9 magazines, or 72 shots per 12 gram powerlet.

ACCURACY TESTS

When shooting from a benchrest my 1008 would typically group 1.0” to 1.25” center-to-center at 10 metres for a full 8 shot magazine. I consider this to be pretty decent for a budget priced plinking pistol with iron sights.
