The following index of names of Finnish residents of the district of Kuusamo was prepared by Max Hahto. Kuusamo was originally in the North West Territories, in what is now Central Alberta. These names were taken from a section of the book "Along the Burnt Lake Trail " and constitute only a partial index of the book. If you find names that are of interest, contact Max at for information on those names. I have adapted this page from an email Max sent to the Finnish genealogy maillist and have made several minor changes to it in the interest of appearance on this page. It is presented here on behalf of Max and in the interests of those researching Finnish ancestors and family.

The settlement, called Kuusamo, was located in the west central part of
Alberta, Canada, just west of the city of Red Deer and not far from Sylvan
Lake. Descriptions of church, school and social life, farm life,
occupations, establishment of community halls, gymnastic clubs, youth
clubs, ladies' clubs, etc. are given. Short biographies and anecdotes are
given for many of the original Finnish settlers. The family stories
frequently provide minute detail of lifestyles at the turn of the century
and also include names of parents and offspring plus places of birth in
Finland and in North America. Migration and transmigration routes across
Canada and USA are sometimes discussed. Other matters, such as name of
ship on which the settlers arrived, place of embarcation and
disembarkation, causes of death and place of interment are often given.

Because the list of Finnish sounding names mentioned in the book (i.e.,
those living in that area in the very early 1900s) is relatively short, I
am attaching hereto these names, children generally excepted. I have
provided birth dates, marriage dates, death dates, places of birth and
death where known, but few other details. Birthdates usually cover the
time frame 1860-1910. If anyone wants any additional information they
could send me a personal message and I would look it up for them. Who
knows, one of our Finngener colleagues could make a lucky strike!

For those who are interested, the book was published by Burnt Lake History
Society, RR1, Red Deer Alberta T4N 5E1, Canada, printed by Friesen
Printers, 5720 Macleod Tr. S., Calgary Alberta T2H 0J6, Canada. It is
copyrighted, 1977, over 544 pages. I do not know if the book is still in
