Prayers and Praises

• Our sincere condolences to the Stronks family as Joanne's father, Mr. Simon Kouwenhoven, passed away at the age of 76. Joanne and her family are attending the funeral in Oakville, Ontario. May the Lord give strength and may you find comfort in the words of Hebrews 4:9, where it says "There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God."

• Keep Bram's mother and father in Tilsonburg in your prayers as Mrs. Drost is suffering from ALS. When elderly parents live far away it is not always easy to visit and many of our families in Bethlehem are in such a situation. May the Lord give you peace. Remember our own elderly members in your prayers as well as those struggling with illnesses and pain.

"O God your constant care and love
are shed upon us from above,
throughout our lives in every stage,
from infancy to later age."

From the Strydhorsts, Nigeria
Dear Friends,
Carolyn and I just returned from a visit to the Kambari Area where we were missionaries from 1994-2000. We had a chance to visit with a lot of our “old” friends and neighbors. One of these was Hilani – now baptized with the name Bulus, translated “Paul.” When we arrived in the village of Kamfani in 1994, Hilani was just a kid; he’d hang around our house learning to read and listening to Bible stories for the first time. Now, 15 years later, he’s among the leaders of the emerging church in the area. He’s married with 2 children, and is preparing for 2 years of evangelism work before going on for further Bible School training. When we asked him about people and villages we’d visited “in those days,” his face glowed as he told us about so many familiar names who were now walking the “Jesus road.” But then he exclaimed, “But there are still so many who aren’t.” We were elated and encouraged by what he shared with us – but also challenged with the task still ahead.
We’re hoping to see many of you in these coming months. As one of our African Rhythm songs asks, “Have you heard what the Lord has done?” Looking forward to sharing stories!
(The Strydhorst Family anticipates being in Thunder Bay August 2 weekend.)

DID YOU KNOW? The 2006 census showed the number of people who are Aboriginal passed the one million mark. Accounting for 3.8 percent of Canada’s population, the rate of growth is 6 times that of the non-Aboriginal population. (From www.statcan.ca). This presents a unique challenge for our churches: Consider and pray about what your church could do to better include this important segment of our population.

His surgery, radiation and chemo treatments were very difficult for him, but his recovery has been remarkable. We are happy to report that the latest tests show no further signs of cancer. It was a blessing to have him with us this Christmas. He’s back to school in January. The Visser family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support throughout the past year. And above all, we thank God for his healing hand.

150th Anniversary of the CRC

REMEMBERING OUR PAST: Did you know? In 1945, after WW II, many Dutch immigrants came to Canada when Canada opened its doors. Most of them were Reformed with ties to the Gereformeerde Kerk in Holland. Rev. Paul De Koekkoek, an American pastor of First CRC in Edmonton, challenged the CRC to use this opportunity to launch a major ministry in Canada. In 1946 the Synod of the CRC approved his recommendation to establish an Immigration Committee for Canada. Many US pastors helped to establish C.R. churches in Canada and many home missionaries and fieldmen assisted immigrants in finding jobs, houses, churches and schools.

And in 1935 the first official Psalter Hymnal was published.

150th Anniversary of the CRC

REMEMBERING OUR PAST
** Did you know that in 1892 the Theological School building for the Christian Reformed Church was dedicated in Grand Rapids, Michigan? Meanwhile in the Netherlands, seceders of 1834 and 1886 joined to form the Gereformeerde Kerken in 1892. Part of this group did not merge; they remained as the Christelijk Gereformeerde Kerk.

** Did you know that the first Christian Reformed Church in Canada was organized in Nijverdal (Nobleford) Alberta, in 1905? The First Christian Reformed Church in Edmonton (which Pastor Henry served from 1985-1992) was organized in 1910.

150th Anniversary of the CRC

REMEMBERING OUR PAST: Did you know? The four churches who left the Dutch Reformed Church to form a new church in 1857 in Graafschap, Michigan, named themselves the Holland Reformed Church in 1859. In 1861 the name was changed to the True Dutch Reformed Church. In 1872 the name was changed again to the Holland Christian Reformed Church.
In the 1880's many immigrants and seceders from the Hervormde Kerk in the Netherlands came to America and joined with the Holland Christian Reformed Church. In 1890 the word “Holland” was dropped from the Holland Christian Reformed Church in America, and the church was called the Christian Reformed Church. In 1891 the 100th Christian Reformed Church was organized in Parkersburg, Iowa.

150th Anniversary of the CRC

REMEMBERING OUR PAST: Did you know that the first Dutch settlers came to America in the 1620's? They founded New Amsterdam, which was later named New York in 1664. There are still traces of that past in New York city today, like the area of Harlem. The Reformed Church in America was first organized in 1628 and still exists today.
In the 1840's, a migration of Dutch Calvinists came to America. A. C. Van Raalte settled with colonists in Holland, Michigan; H. P. Scholte settled in Pella, Iowa. In 1848 nine churches of the Michigan colony organized themselves into a Classis. And in 1850, the nine churches in Michigan decided to join the already existing Dutch Reformed Church in America. In 1857, four churches left the Dutch Reformed Church to form a new church in Graafschap, Michigan, because of dissatisfaction with preaching and discipline in the Reformed Church. This was the beginning of the Christian Reformed Church.

Sesquicentennial or the 150th Anniversary!

The Christian Reformed Church will celebrate its 150th anniversary as a denomination in 2007. The theme adopted is “GRACE THROUGH EVERY GENERATION”. The planned activities for this observance will span the calendar year of 2007 as follows:
a. The REMEMBERING phase, January to April, is a time to remember and give thanks for all who have gone before and for the contribution so many have made to make the CRC what it is today.
b. The REJOICING phase, May to September, will be a time for giving thanks to God for the gifts and challenges that mark the journey of the CRC to date. This phase will also include a number of large worship events throughout the denomination.
c. The REDEDICATION phase, October to December, will call people to recommitment to being a follower of Christ, to the mission of God in the world and to the part that the CRC is called to fulfill as a participant in the church worldwide.

A local 150th Anniversary Committee has been struck with representatives from the three CRC’s: Pastor Henry VanderBeek, Chris and Audrey Grootenboer, Harold deJong, Jenny Mol, Herb and Janette Bax.
We are planning and liaising with the three CRC Councils and Worship Committees to celebrate this important milestone in the life of our denomination and churches in an appropriate manner here in Thunder Bay. Some special worship services, perhaps a choir, an evening hymn sing and other events are tentatively being planned. Please contact any member for input or information. Our denomination website also is posting details as the scheduling of events are finalized at: http://www.crcna.org/pages/sesquicentennial_events.cfm

A book by Scott Hoezee, “Grace Through Every Generation” which covers the last 50 years of our denominations history has been published. It is available from Faith Alive Resources at 1-800-333-8300 or by e-mail sales@FaithAliveResources.org at a cost of $8.35 Cdn.
