The Community Response to HIV / AIDS
Since the mid-1980s we have provided quality, compassionate support, education and advocacy around HIV and AIDS, and related issues. We have been facilitators, communicators, and providers to Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario. In 2002, we changed our name from the AIDS Committee of Thunder Bay to AIDS Thunder Bay. Our new name and logo are designed to enhance our visibility in the community, and to remind people that AIDS is not going away.
Professional, compassionate staff, dedicated volunteers, and established
community networks are the trademarks of our tradition of service.
In spite of scientific and medical advances, HIV/AIDS continues to be a
catastrophic illness. People in Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario continue to be affected (men, women, gay, straight, injection drug users, aboriginals, young, old), while stigma and discrimination impact on the lives of those affected by HIV and AIDS.
Being part of the community, we operate on a philosophy of equal access for all,
with services based on needs determined by the people using them. Health promotion and harm reduction models guide our programs and services.
We believe in working together with the rest of the community to find the best
solutions to needs identified by the people we serve.
We are a non-profit corporation, governed by a board of directors elected by
our membership. We are a registered charity. Our core funding comes from the
AIDS Bureau, Ontario Ministry of Health. We also receive project funding
from a variety of sources. A significant portion of our funding comes from
local fundraising efforts.
We are part of a broad community-based response to HIV and AIDS, both
provincially (Ontario AIDS Network) and nationally (Canadian AIDS Society).
