It's Good To Know
HIV Testing Social Marketing Campaign

We are pleased to announce the re-launch of our social marketing campaign to raise awareness of the need for HIV testing and to enourage individuals to get tested for HIV. In Thunder Bay the campaign features transit shelter ads (running through February and March) and bathroom ads.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has estimated that there are some 17,000 people in Canada living with HIV and unaware of their infection. This group is important because until the HIV infection is diagnosed, these people cannot take advantage of available treatment strategies or appropriate counselling to prevent the further spread of HIV. At a meeting in Thunder Bay in September, 2004, Dr. Robert Remis, U of T epidemiologist, said “There is a hidden epidemic. In every region of the province there are people who don’t know they have HIV because they have not been tested.”

“After hearing Dr. Remis speak, AIDS Thunder Bay decided to take up the challenge. and launch a regional social marketing campaign. The result you see is the “It’s Good To Know” campaign.” said Michael Sobota, Executive Director of AIDS Thunder Bay.

The testing campaign will help people become aware of the importance of testing, and will direct them to the Anonymous HIV Testing service provided by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. If you have questions or need more information, you can call us at 807-345-1516 in Thunder Bay or 1-800-488-5840 in the region. In Thunder Bay people can contact Anonymous HIV Testing directly by calling 625-5981. .
